Chapter Members Bob Mount, Fred Becker, Chip Chipley, Kern Thornton and Glenn Wienhoff were joined by family and friends for Chapter 142's last event at Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant on December 14, 2022. Fred Becker spoke of the Chapter's activities and achievements, and all enjoyed the Christmas Luncheon Buffet.
Among those attending were Republic of Korea Embassy military attaché who graciously paid for the luncheon, Golden Gears Car Club President Jay Henley who has been a long time supporter, and Priscilla Rall who has taken custody of the Chapter's memorabilia. Korean War Veterans residing at Citizens/Monteview among many others honored the Chapter with attendance.

On Thursday November 10, 2022, which would have been Col William E Weber's 97th birthday, a Road Dedication Ceremony was held at the Libertytown Fire Hall in Maryland. Henceforth, Rte 26, also known as Liberty Road, from Libertytown to Rte 15 is dedicated in his name.
Col Weber's daughter-in-law, Beth Chambers Weber, and his granddaughter, Dayne Weber, unveiled the new road sign. The sign reads:

Col Chang representing Major General Kyungkoo Lee, Republic of Korea Defense Attache, spoke admirably of Col Weber and his steadfast recognition of the KATUSA. Dignitaries present were Col (Ret) Charles Zimmerman, VFW Post 8806; Libertytown Fire Chief, Mr. Chip Jewell; Lauren Hackett, from Linganore High School who sang the National Anthem; Chaplain James Harris, VFW Post 8806 who gave the Invocation and Benediction; Col (Ret) Richard Dean, Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation; Ms. Jan Gardener, Frederick County Executive; Mrs. Yumi Hogan, First Lady of Maryland; and Dwight Reynolds, American Legion Post 282 who sang God Bless America.
Representing Chapter 142 were Commander Becker and Secretary Wienhoff, who were greeted personally by First Lady Yumi Hogan and Republic of Korea Col Chang.

Sunday November 6, 2022, was a drizzly day as Chapter 142 members Chip Chipley, Richard Cody, Fred Becker and Glenn Wienhoff participated in the 90th Brunswick Veterans Day Parade. Members rode in Fred Becker's and Richard Cody's convertibles, with the tops and windows up. Weather aside fun was had by all and the parade was a success.
The Brunswick Parade has been held the Sunday before Veterans Day for the last 90 years. It is one of the oldest celebrations of our nation's veterans in the country.

Oakdale High School
Oakdale High School held a Veterans Day celebration on 9 November 2022.
Chapter 142 members, Robert Mount and Charles Chipley, were invited to speak with two classes about their military experience. The students were attentive and asked various questions about their experiences.
After the classroom visits, they proceeded to the auditorium for a veteran's day program. The keynote speaker was Dr. Kraig Sheetz, Executive Vice President of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD. He is a retired U.S. Army Colonel with 28 years of military service.
The program recognized veterans of all branches with the armed forces medley.
Lunch was provided for all veterans after the program.
Montevue Program
Montevue Assisted Living of Frederick, MD held a Veterans Day celebration on November 10, 2022. Chapter 142 members Robert Mount, Kern Thornton and Charles Chipley attended as guests.
Bob Mount was one of the speakers and told of his Korean War experience.
Other speakers were from Hospice and the local Vietnam War chapter.
Presentation of awards were made to all veterans living at the home.
A check from Chapter 142 in the amount of $1,000 was presented for veteran’s assistance at the facility.
Refreshments, pizza and beer were served after the program.
Korean War Memorial Rededication Ceremony Washington, DC
Freedom is Not Free
On July 27, 2022, the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC was rededicated with a ceremony unveiling the Wall of Remembrance. The granite wall is etched with the names of the US military and Korean Augmentation to the United States Army (KATUSA) who gave their lives defending the freedom of the South Korean people. Here is a visible, solid bond between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
Chapter 142 namesake, Col (Ret) William E. Weber, had worked tirelessly for decades in conjunction with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation toward the construction of the Wall of Remembrance to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and allow for future generations to not forget the cost of freedom. With an extremely generous donation from the Republic of Korea, his dream was realized on this day.
Chapter 142 members Tony Mara, Chip Chipley, Fred Becker and Bob Mount braved the heat of the day to honor those fallen and attend the ceremony. The Korean War Memorial Rededication can be viewed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation website or on YouTube.

Colonel William E. Weber Laid to Rest Arlington National Cemetery
On June 22, 2022 Col (Ret) William E. Weber was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, our nation’s most hallowed ground. This historic cemetery bears witness to the sacrifice of men and women in uniform throughout U.S. history, which Col. Weber represents as he dedicated his entire life to the service of our nation and his fellow comrades.
Col (Ret) William E. Weber received full military honors with escort; a riderless horse, color guard, playing of Taps, firing party for a volley salute, a military band, a military team of pallbearers and a caisson driven by six horses to the gravesite.

2022 Memorial Day Program

Chapter Members Commander Fred Becker, Chip Chipley, Bob Mount and Glenn Wienhoff attended the Citizens/Montevue Assisted Living Memorial Day Program on May 27, 2022 in Frederick County, Maryland. A check for $1,000 was presented to the Facility's Volunteer Auxiliary for the benefit of veterans residing at the location.

On April 22, 2022 a contingent from the Frederick and Hagerstown KWVA Chapters attended the Memorial Service for Col. (Ret) William E. Weber at Resthaven Memorial Gardens and provided a Final Salute. Korean Minister of Veterans Affairs Hwang Ki-cheol read a message from President Moon Jae-in, and Korean Ambassador to the United States Lee Su-hyeok read a message from President-elect Yoon Soek-yeol, both expressing condolences and paying tribute to a Korean War hero.
President Moon wrote, "I salute you. We will continue to work hard so that the ROK-US alliance, which was forged with the blood and tears of American veteran, including the deceased, can continue to be strong in the future." Minister Hwang Ki-cheol then presented a tribute plaque to Annelie Weber.
President-elect Yoon wrote, "Colonel Weber’s courage and sacrifice greatly contributed to the defense of Korean territory and freedom. After his discharge, he devoted himself so that the whole world would not forget the Korean War."
Former South Korean Defense Attaché to the United States and current Secretary General to the Korean US Alliance Foundation Korean Army Major Gen (Ret) Shin Kyoung Soo spoke affectionately of his friendship with Col Weber, describing him as a hero and mentor.
C. Monika Stoy, US Army, Retired President, Outpost 5845 International, Society of the 3rd Infantry Division spoke of her first austere impression of Col Weber in 2007, and how over time she came to know him as a warm person. She thanked Annelie and Bill for continuing to preserve the history of Airborne.
Eric Lynn, Vice President of the 101st Airborne Division, read a letter from Pastor So Kang Suk of Saint Eden Presbyterian Church in Korea; Col (Ret) Rick Dean noted Bill’s birthday was the same as the Marine Corps birthday; and KWVA National Chaplain Emeritus Reverend Keep gave closing remarks pointing out that Col Weber was determined that the Korean War be forgotten no longer.
2021 Christmas Luncheon
Chapter Members were joined by family and friends to celebrate the 25th Chapter Anniversary at Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant on December 8, 2021. Chip Chipley gave a presentation of past Chapter activities and achievements, and all enjoyed the Christmas Luncheon Buffet.
Bob Mount, Rodney Hall, Chip Chipley, Gene Rinehart and Glenn Wienhoff were joined by family and friends to celebrate the 25th Chapter Anniversary. Fred Becker also attended but had to leave early.
Among those attending were two assistants of the Republic of Korea military attaché, and Golden Gears Car Club President Jay Henley. Mrs. Cho, a great friend of the Chapter, brought boxes of chocolates for all the Veterans. Chapter Members attending were Bob Mount, Rodney Hall, Chip Chipley, Gene Rinehart, Glenn Wienhoff and Fred Becker.

On November 7, 2021, Members of Chapter 142 participated in the Brunswick Veterans Day Parade.
The Brunswick Parade has been held the Sunday before Veterans Day for the last 89 years. It is one of the oldest celebrations of our nation's veterans in the country and had over 90 entries this year. KWVA Chapter 142 had two cars in the Parade.
Parade organizers estimate this was one of, if not the THE, largest crowds they've ever had.

Golden Gears Presents Donation to CID142 2021

On September 6, 2021, Golden Gears Car Club President Jay Henley presented a check to KWVA Chapter 142. Accepting the check for Chapter 142 were Commander Becker and Chip Chipley.
Each year Golden Gears Car Club has supported local veterans groups: KWVA Chapter 142, Shangri-La Detachment U.S. Marine Corps Frederick Chapter 118 and Vietnam Veterans of America. In past years, Golden Gears has raised funds by hosting Car Shows and Bingo. This year, the club raised funds with Bingo For Vets at the Frederick Elk's Lodge.
Bingo For Vets was very successful and Commander Becker was floored with a donation of $2,790!
Not Forgotten 2021

On July 27, 2021, Armistice Day, Members of KWVA Chapter 142 gathered at the Frederick Korean War Memorial to lay a wreath remembering comrades who lost their lives during the conflict. Commander Fred Becker read the names of soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice and Secretary Glenn Wienhoff rang the bell after each name, calling attention to remember.

Twenty-six soldiers from the county died during the Korean War:
Charles Brandenburg, Paul Carty, Manville Dagenhart, Jacob Ely, Raymond Flair, Edward Fisher, Samuel Frye, Albert Green, Raymond Kemp Jr., Harvey Luby, Harold Lugenbeel, Albert Miss, Ira Miss Jr., Norman Reid, Charles Roberts, Paul Sewell, Clyde Smith, Virgil Stambaugh, Norman Thompson Jr., Robert Thomas Jr., Joseph Trail, Jack Wallace, Victor Wills, Irvin Lanehart, George Ambrose, and Sterling Ambrose.
Their names are etched in the center column of the Memorial. Hundreds of other Marylanders who sacrificed their lives are engraved to either side.

Chapter members were joined by Jan Gardener, Frederick County Executive, Don Lehman of the Shangri La Detachment of the Marine Corps League and Willie Jenkins, Commander of the American Legion Francis Scott Key Post 11, Frederick, MD as well as others from the public. Priscilla Rall, former director of the Frederick County Veterans History Project and friend of Chapter 142, gave a speech about the valor of soldiers. Golden Gears Bingo 2021
Commander Fred Becker, Kern Thorton, Chip Chipley and Secretary Glenn Wienhoff man the Korean War Information table.
On July 24, 2021, Golden Gears Car Club hosted Bingo For Vets at the Frederick Elk's Lodge. Proceeds will be distributed to local Veteran groups. Over the years, the car club has been a big contributor to Chapter 142.
Golden Gears Car Club also welcomed KWVA Chapter 142 to "Get The Word Out" with an information table and the pop-up display.

On May 21, 2021 Commander Fred Becker, Treasurer Bob Mount and Executive Committee Member Chip Chipley attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Wall of Remembrance in Washington DC along with Col.William E. Weber, Chapter 142's namesake.
Col. Weber has worked tirelessly as Chairman Emeritus for the Korean War Memorial Foundation to realize the construction of the Wall of Remembrance. Chapter 142 Scholarship Fund
Our scholarship recipients for the 2021/22 college year are Jacob Fox who is the grandson of our former member James Walsh, and Ella Melcher who is the granddaughter of Chase Loveless. Jacob will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Ella will be attending Warren Wilson College. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the KWVA Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
Council of Korean Churches 2020
Reverend Kim, Bob Mount, Kern Thornton, Bill Fox, Wendell Murphy, Commander Becker, Chip Chipley, Gene Rinehart, Rodney Hall, Council representative, Hi Sook Park, Council representative, and Glenn Wienhoff
Representatives of the Council of Korean Churches of Greater Washington presented gifts to Chapter 142 members. Reverend Stephen J. Kim, President of the Council of Korean Churches of Greater Washington, and two assistants visited the Chapter 142 Executive Meeting on October 6, 2020 outside AMVETS Post #2. The representatives thanked members for their service during the Korean War and presented each veteran with an honorary vest, a memorial wall hanging thanking all UN member countries who participated in defending Korea and three high tech Covid 19 protective masks.

On Monday, July 27, 2020, National Korean War Armistice Day, members of Chapter 142 lay a wreath at the Korean War Memorial in Frederick, MD, in rememberance of comrades who gave their lives for the freedom of South Korea. The Korean War armistice was 67 years ago when hostilities ceased on the Korean peninsula and an uneasy truce began. The names of 26 Frederick County residents are engraved on the Memorial's centerpiece and hundreds of other Marylanders who sacrificed their lives are engraved to either side.

Fred Becker gave a speech ending with the reading of all 26 names on the centerpiece of the Memorial. Priscilla Rall, who has been instrumental in recording thousands of veterans' histories, also spoke and brought home some of the stories about the 26 Frederick County soldiers.

Korean Defense Services donate masks to US Korean War Veterans 2020

The Defense Forces of the Republic of Korea donated a planeload of masks for prevention of Covid 19 Virus to US Korean War Veterans so that the veterans would have protection against the disease. Masks received by Chapter 142 of Frederick, MD were distributed to local members of the Korean War Veterans Association and to local Veterans Organizations such as Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 in Frederick.

Country Meadows Retirement Center hosted a lunch on July 23, 2019 at their facility. Korean War veterans living at Country Meadows were joined by Chapter 142 members, wives and friends.

On July 15, 2019, Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan invited Korean War Veterans to a “Welcome Home” Reception at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis, Maryland. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan writes:
There can't possibly be words adequate enough to express our gratitude, our respect, and our appreciation to our men and women in uniform. In spite of all the things that have sought to divide us in this country, and that still divide us today, we are brought together by the tremendous respect we hold and the incredible debt that we owe to all those who have worn the flag of our nation on their arm and who are willing to lay down their lives to protect the rights and freedoms that we hold so dear.
Several members of Chapter 142 attended the reception and were personally greeted by Yumi Hogan, who was born in Naju, South Korea in 1959 and became a U.S. citizen in 1994. She has great respect for Korean War Veterans, who fought selflessly for her birth country, and honors them every year with a reception in the Maryland State capitol.
Among those attending from Chapter 142 were Commander Fred Becker, Richard Cody, Chip Chipley, Dr. Kim, Secretary Glenn Wienhoff, Bill Fox and Treasurer Bob Mount. Several members from KWVA Chapter 312, Hagerstown, were also present. The reception was also attended by Secretary George W. Chapter 142 Presented the Colors at the Golden Gears Car Show on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Lewistown Fire Hall. A full contingent made for a complete Color Guard. The day was hot, the breeze was blowing and the flags were waving.
This was the tenth annual Car Show put on by the Golden Gears Car Club of Frederick County. Golden Gears holds the Car Show to raise funds for local veterans groups - KWVA Chapter 142 being a beneficiary. At the request of the Golden Gears Car Club, a Moment of Rememberance was given for Tony Malavenda, who was a good friend to the Club and had always participated in the Presentation of Colors at the Car Show.
Rodney Hall, Bob Mount, Glenn Wienhoff, Commander Fred Becker, Chip Chipley, Bill Fox, Bob Eader and Gene Rinehart Presented the Colors, manned an information booth and set-up the Korean War pop-up display in the Hall. Rose Wienhoff was on hand all day to assist. Rose is also the Chapter's photographer-at-large and supplied the photographs for the slideshow above.
This year, the Corvette won Best-In-Show.
Woodsboro Memorial Day Parade 2019

On May 25, 2019, Chapter members Commander Becker, Vice Commander Eader, Executive Committee member Murphy, Executive Committee member Rinehart, Secretary Wienhoff and Treasurer Mount participated in the Woodsboro Memorial Day Parade. Murphy's truck carried the Fallen Comrade Display, Wienhoff's car displayed the flags and Becker's convertible made for a three car entry.

Five Chapter members and wives attended the Frederick Veterans History Project luncheon at Country Meadows on June 1, 2019. Priscilla Rall reported she is stepping down as Chairman of the FVHP and that a veteran who resides in Homewood will be the new chair. Priscilla will continue interviewing veterans and will be active in the organization.

On March 13, 2019, before the Chapter's regular meeting, a check was presented by Treasurer Robert Mount to Daniel Tregoing, Trustee of the Community Foundation of Frederick County for the Col. William E. Weber Chapter 142 Korean War Veterans Association of Frederick County, Maryland Inc. Scholarship Fund.
The Chapter started the Scholarship Fund in 2004, and has kept it running continuously ever since in support of higher education for children and grandchildren of Korean War Veterans.
Korean-American Day in Maryland

Governor Larry Hogan and First Lady Yumi Hogan hosted a Korean-American Recognition Day on January 7, 2019 at the Governor's Reception Room in the historic Maryland State House.
Richard Cody and Robert Flores represented Chapter 142 at the reception and were presented a citation by First Lady Yumi Hogan.

Members of Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 142 presented a Plaque to the Golden Gears Car Club in appreciation for their Veterans sponsorship at the Car Show and Bingo held at the Lewiston Fire Hall in Frederick, MD, on June 30, 2018. For several years, the Golden Gears Car Club has annually sponsored Chapter 142, which has allowed the Chapter to provide many benefits and scholarships to Korean War Veterans and their families.

Golden Gears has been a staunch supporter of Chapter 142 (and veterans in general) for many years. Members of Chapter 142 participated in the parade at Rocky Ridge, Maryland on August 15, 2018. Before the parade, a delicious meal was enjoyed at the Priscilla Rall and Richard Stambaugh residence.
Wendell Muprhy rode in his truck which was driven by Bob Eader with the fallen comrade display in the truck bed. Four Chapter members rode in Commander Becker's convertible. Mrs. Weber participated in the dinner and Col. Weber and Richard Stambaugh viewed the parade.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan honored Maryland Korean War veterans at the Governor's Mansion in Annapolis for a "Welcome Home" reception and dinner on August 9, 2018. Among those attending were Korean Ambassador to the United States, Cho Yoon-je; Secretary of Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, George Owings III; Executive Director of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation, Jim Fisher; and members of the Korean Embassy and Korean War Veterans Association. Wendell Murphy, Chapter 142 Commander Frederick Becker, Charles Chipley and Chapter namesake Col. William Weber, USA retired, represented Chapter 142.
First Lady of Maryland, Yumi Hogan, grew up on a farm in the countryside of South Korea. She immigrated to the United States in her 20s and became a U.S. citizen in 1994. "Mrs. Hogan is the recipient of the 2017 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a highly-prestigious, nationally-recognized award by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, which recognizes her accomplishments in leadership and inspired service to the state and nation; all while maintaining the traditions of their ethnic heritage as they uphold the ideals and spirit of America." http://governor.maryland.gov/firstlady/
In traditional Korean attire, Mrs. Hogan greeted guests to the Ceremony. She always tells Korean War veterans she would not be here if it were not for the their dedication and sacrifice. Governor Hogan said, "There can't possibly be words adequate enough to express our gratitude and our profound respect to each and every one of you who served." The Governor has proclaimed August 9 as "Welcome Home Korean War Veterans Day" and plans to submit a bill to the state legislature to make July 27 "Korean War Veterans Day" in Maryland.

On July 21, 2018, Korean/American Hannah Kim layed a wreath the Frederick Korean War Memorial on her three-month-long journey to visit Korean War Memorials in all continental States, including Alaska (http://remember727.org). Hannah Kim, a tireless advocate for Korean War Veterans, founded Remember727 in 2008. In 2009, Hannah successfully lobbied to pass legislation that established July 27th as the National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in the United States. She most recently has worked as chief of staff and communications director to Rep. Charles B. Rangel.
The goal of this journey has been to raise awareness and funds to help build a Wall of Remembrance at the National Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and remind us all that "Freedom is not Free". Although the Wall of Remembrance Act was passed by Congress in 2016, plans to build the wall have languished due to a lack of initial funds. The goal is for the Wall of Remembrance to be built as soon as possible so that as many Korean War Veterans can attend the dedication ceremony.
Hannah Kim was greeted by members of Chapter 142, including namesake Col. William E. Weber, who is a tireless advocate for the Wall of Rememberance, and Priscilla Rall, Director of the Frederick County Veterans History Project. Anthony Marra, a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and also a Chapter 142 member, said "I think it's very nice. We're all here in the rain to support her and to support [Republic of Korea]." Rain let loose as the Ceremony began, but the laying of the wreath carried forth with Chapter member Chip Chipley huddled over the electrical equipment with an umbrella. The remainder of the ceremony was held in the Armory per a suggestion from the attending Sheriff.

Chapter 142 members participated in the Woodboro Memorial Day Parade on May 27, 2018. Chip Chipley, Bill Fox, Tony Malavenda and Reg Kephart rode in Reg's convertible. Commander Mount, Glenn Wienhoff, Gene Rinehart and Fred Becker rode in Fred's convertible. Bob Eader and Wendell Murphy rode in Wendell's truck with the fallen comrade display in the truck bed. Much candy was thrown to the children.

We had a good turnout for the Presentation of Colors at the 1940's Era Dance on February 3, 2018 at the Citizens/Monteview Senior Center. Nine Chapter members participated so we had a complete set of colors as well as the US Flag and the MIA flag plus 2 rifles. Those participating were Chip Chipley, Glenn Wienhoff, Bill Fox, Bob Eader, Jim Miller, Gene Rinehart, Tony Malavenda, Ted Carlson and Reg Kephart. The event featured a swing band and jitterbug dance pairs which could really do the dances. Our Chapter helped with the funding of the event.
Korean Ambassador Cho Yoon-je 2018
Jim Fisher, Executive Director of KWVA, sent an email as follows on February 13, 2018:
I have been informed by the Office of the Ambassador of Korea that he would like to meet with Local Chapter Commanders and Directors from the Washington, DC area on March 2, 2018 for a luncheon meeting at the Korean Embassy.
Commander Mount was unable to attend and Vice Commander Becker was going on vacation, so the Commander designated Secretary Wienhoff to attend, which he did.
The luncheon was attended by General Pyo and office staff of the Military Attache. It featured an excellent Korean food buffet.
The meeting with Ambassador Cho convened at 2:30 pm and the Ambassador was very congenial towar the KWVA attendees. He is an Economist and has held Professor and Korean Representvve position in many countries. He was born during the Korean War. The Ambassador thanks everyone for attending and expressed his appreciation with a memento of the Embassy for each Korean War Veteran.

The Holiday Party was held on December 13, 2017 and was attended by Colonel Youngjun Choi, Republic of Korea Military Attache to the US Army, who dilivery remarks and thanked the veterans for their service.
It was a very enjoyable event for all present; the meal prepared by Dutch's Daughter Restaurant was delicious, and Anne Thompson, a Hospice volunteer, provided great sing-along music.
Special recognition was given to Joanne Ambrose from General Engineering for printing the Chapter Newletter, and to Dave Cain from East Frederick Storage who provides space for our Chapter goods. Unfortunately, Dave could not attend in person.
Also unable to attend was Commander Bob Mount who was ill. Vice Commander Fred Becker initiated the program.

Our Chapter again participated in the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Brunswick MD on November 5, 2017. The weather was not too cooperative but there was no rain at parade time so the convertible tops went down and we had two vehicles in the parade. Gene Rinehart and Fred Becker rode in Fred's convertible and Commander Mount, Chip Chipley and Glenn Wienhoff rode in Glenn's convertible.

Chapter 142 Commander Robert Mount spoke to two classes of students at Oakdale High School about the Korean War on November 8, 2017 prior to the school's Veterans Day event. Every November Bob Mount has been invited to bring the Tell America Program to local schools to share first-hand experience with America's younger generations.

Chapter 142 members presented the Colors at the start of the Middletown High School Varsity Girls Volley Ball game on October 5, 2017 in the school's gym. The team posed for a picture with the Color Guard members. Color Guard participants were Vice Commander Fred Becker, Gene Rinehart, Commander Bob Mount, Chip Chipley, Secretary Glenn Wienhoff, Reg Kephart and Treasurer Bob Eader. The team later presented a donation towards the Wall of Remembrance, which is greatly appreciated.

This years annual Summer Picnic was held on Saturday, September 16, at Dutch's Daughter Restaurant and attended by Republic of Korea Brigadier General Se Woo Pyo, Defense Attaché to the United States, who delivered an inspiring speech.
Thanks to Howard Whang and Jim Kim of the Korean American Association of Prince George's County, we were able to surprise six of our members with a special presentation of plaques and add much to the success of the event. In fact, they took the presentation to Jack at the nursing home, which was a great gesture on their part.

POW/MIA Recognition Day
On September 15, 2017, members of Chapter 142 joined the Vietnam Veterans of America for POW/MIA Recognition Day. The small table was set.

Members of Chapter 142 commemorated the 64th Anniversary of the Armistice ending the Korean Wat on July 27th, 1953 with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Korean War Memorial at Monument Park in Frederick, MD on July 27, 2017 at 10:00 am.
Forming a two row honor detail, members paid their respects as Vice Commander Becker and Purple Heart recipient Wendell Murphy placed the wreath at the Memorial. Honor detail consisted of Commander Mount, Gene Rinehart, Tony Marra, Bill Fox, Treasurer Eader, Jim Miller, Chip Chipley and Reg Kephart.
Members Help Raise Funds for Camp Corral

Each summer the Golden Corral Restaurant franchise brand raises funds to send children of veterans to a week at summer camp at no charge to the participants. This year, four members of Chapter 142 (Bob Eader, Tony Malavenda, Reg Kephart and Wendell Murphy) assisted in helping raise funds for the program at the local Golden Corral Restaurant.
Veteran's Information and Recognition Day
On July 10, 2017 the Frederick County Department of Aging held a Veterans Information and Recognition Day. Commander Bob Mount and Treasurer Bob Eader set up the Chapter 142's Korean War exhibit and spoke with many visitors. Below are two of the event's visitors, State Delegate Kathy Afzali and Col. ROK President Moon Jae-in at the Korean War Memorial
On June 30, 2017, Republic of Korea President Moon Jae-in attended the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. for a Wreath Laying Ceremony. After Opening Remarks and Salutation to the National Flags, ROK President Moon Jae-in, U.S. Vice President Michael Pence and U.S. KWVA President Thomas Stevens laid wreaths in rememberance of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the Republic of Korea.
Wendell Murphy, Vice Commander Fred Becker and Secretary Glenn Wienhoff represented Chapter 142. Wendell Murphy, a purple heart recipient, was personally greeted by President Moon Jae-in as well as Vice President Pence. Also in attendance was Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan, who is the first Korean American first lady in the United States.

Chapter 142 presented the Colors at the Golden Gears Home Run Car Show on Sunday, June 25, 2017 on Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. The Car Show was to be held on Saturday but had been postponed to Sunday due to impending rain. Not all Color Guard members could make the shift from Saturday to Sunday, so two members from the Shangri-La Detachment U.S. Marine Corps 118 stood in to complete the Color Guard. A big Thank You goes out to Ron Layman and Tommy Grunwell for pitching in.
This was the eighth annual Home Run Car Show put on by the Golden Gears Car Club of Frederick County. Golden Gears holds the Car Show and a raffle to raise funds for local veterans groups. Vietnam Veterans of America, KWVA Chapter 142 and the Shangri-La Detachment U.S. Marine Corps 118 were the beneficiaries of this year's Car Show.
Bob Mount, Tony Malavenda, Bob Eader, Gene Rinehart, Glenn Wienhoff, and Fred Becker, along with Ron Layman and Tommy Grunwell, opened the Car Show by presenting the Colors. Throughout the Car Show, members provided information about the Korean War and the Chapter with the help of Glenn Wienhoff's daughter, Rose. Rose Wienhoff is also becoming the Chapter's photographer-at-large and supplied the photographs for the slideshow above.
This year, Chapter 142 selected a Car Show participant to receive the Veterans Choice Award. The award went to Sandy Daniels-Palmer, whose modified red Charger with Bald Eagle engine cover and driver was a show stopper. The AWD HEMI also sports the signatures of Richard Petty and his pit crew.
Washington DC Memorial Day Parade 2017

Frederick's Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 142 honored Frederick's Fallen Heroes with participation in the Nation's National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC. The parade was followed by Ceremonies at the Korean War Memorial in which a white rose was placed at the name of each of the 22 Nations that participated in the Korean War. They rode in four convertibles and Murphy's pick-up truck, which had a Fallen Soldier display in its bed. It was a very good turn-out and the weather cooperated this year!

Korean Embassy Representatives Visit Citizens/Montevue Nursing Care Center
Veteran residents of Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center and Montevue Assisted Living facilities were pleasantly surprised on Thursday, December 22, 2016, when they were visited by representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea: Korean Marine Lt. Col. Kangwook Lee, and Korean Navy Commander Tagoon Lee. The members of the Korean Embassy delivered flowers on behalf of Ambassador Ahn and expressed his thanks for the sacrifice veterans made during the Korean War. This event was made possible through efforts by Brigadier General Se Woo Pyo, Defense Attaché to the United States from the Republic of Korea. Brigadier General Se Woo Pyo attends Chapter Christmas Luncheon
At the Christmas party, held at Dutch's Daughter restaurant on December 14, 2016, Commander Robert Mount introduced the Republic of Korea's Military Attaché, Brigadier General Se Woo Pyo. Brigadier General Pyo gave an inspiring presentation in which he expressed the gratitude of the Korean people for the sacrifices made by United States military personnel who saved South Korea from domination by North Korea.

Frederick County Veterans History Project Donation

At a luncheon on November 18, 2016, Chapter 142 made a $1,000 donation to the Frederick County Veterans History Project.
The Frederick County Veterans Project is part of the National Veterans History Project, whose mission is to record on DVD as many interviews with veterans as possible. As Priscilla Rall, director of the Frederick County Veterans History Project, says, "We interview any Veteran. It doesn't matter whether they were stateside, in the Cold War, anywhere." KWVA Chapter 142 Tells America
Under the Korean War Veterans Association's "Tell America" program, Bob Mount and Chip Chipley of Chapter 142 presented information to about 110 middle school students at Urbana Middle School on November 14, 2016.

On November 10, 2016, members of the local Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 were guests at the breakfast honoring Montevue/Citizens nursing care center resident veterans. In attendance from Chapter 142 were Chip Chipley, Ted Carlson, Tony Malavenda, Reggie Kephart and Bob Mount.
After the breakfast, the Chapter presented a $2,000 donation to the Needy Veterans Fund maintained by the Montevue/Citizens Auxiliaries. This fund makes it possible for the facilities to provide comfort items to the veterans, items that would not be included in the normal operation of the facility.
Auxiliary President Linda Turbyville accepted the $2,000 check from Chapter 142 Commander Bob Mount.

The Col William E Weber Chapter 142 Korean War Veterans Association of Frederick County Maryland, Inc recently made a $1000 contribution to AMVETS Post 2. Commander Bob Mount, along with Treasurer Bob Eader and Secretary Glenn Wienhoff, presented the check to Mark Redmond, Commander of AMVETS Post 2.
Korean War Veterans Host Farewell for Major General Shin

On September 22, 2016, Frederick Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 142, along with Antietam KWVA Chapter 312 and Shenandoah KWVA Chapter 313, hosted a Farewell Luncheon at Dutch's Daughter restaurant for Major General Shin Kyoung Soo and his wife, Miyoung You. Major General Shin has been the Defense Attaché of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to the United States for the past three years. He will soon be retiring and returning to South Korea.
Over the past three years, Major General Shin has had a special relationship with the US Korean War Veterans ranging from visiting the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. with Colonel William Weber of KWVA Chapter 142 to laying wreaths at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. Major General Shin and his wife have attended each of KWVA Chapter 142's past Christmas Luncheons, often surprising the veterans by covering the cost of the luncheons, and he has also hosted luncheons for Korean War Veterans at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. KWVA Chapter 142 has provided Color Guards for the Major General.
During the Farewell Luncheon attended by 80 veterans and guests, KWVA Chapter 142 Commander Robert Mount gave a salute to Miyoung You, and Retired Colonel William Weber gave a toast to Major General Shin. Commander Mobely of Chapter 312 presented Major General Shin with an Antietam Afghan Blanket and Miyoung You with a beautiful necklace. Commander Netschke of Chapter 313 presented to Major General Shin a framed numbered copy of Mort Künstler's scene showing General Lee, General Jackson and President Davis at Davis' office discussing battle plans, and to Miyoung You a gorgeous vase. Commander Mount then presented Major General Shin with a collage of Chapter 142 photographs prepared by Priscilla Rall and two books: "The Battle of the Monocacy", since the Major General is a Civil War buff, and "Fighting on the Brink (the Pusan perimeter defense)" by Uzal W. Ent.
Major General Shin spoke of the Korean concept of inyon, sometimes translated as "relation and affinity". He said he has felt most welcomed by the veterans and he shares inyon with them. Commander Mount responded that though there will be a new Defense Attaché, he will have a hard time being as good a representative as Major General Shin.
The luncheon concluded with renewed ties between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

Fact, Stranger? Than Fiction!

On 25 Jun 2015 the KWVMFnd [Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation] sponsored a ceremony, at which we read at the Korean War Veterans Memorial the names of the 36,574 U.S. Soldiery KIA in the Korean War. Unknown to our people is that Republic of Korea Soldiers were assigned to U.S. units during the war due to a shortage of trained U.S. replacements. KATUSA combat losses would otherwise have been U.S.
They were called Korean Augmentation To U.S. Army (KATUSA). Approximately 25% of U.S. Army combat and combat support units were KATUSA. Over 23,000 KATUSA served during the war and continue to do so today in the 2nd U.S. Inf Div. Of these, during 25 Jun '50, to 27 Jul '53, 5936 were KIA! That's a ratio of almost 1 in 5 vs a U.S. ratio of 1 in 9 - almost twice as much! Irrespective of the ratio it is fair to assume every KATUSA KIA could otherwise well have been a U.S. Soldier!
Ergo, in honor of their sacrifice and the U.S. Soldiery lives they saved, this past 25 Jun 2016, we read the names of these KATUSA KIA, just as we did their U.S. counterparts last June. The 'reading symbolism' used was to have the name read first by a Korean (KATUSA vet, ROK Embassy military aides, Korean-American KATUSA veterans, Korean-American ROK Army veterans) and then by U.S. Korean War Veterans Association member, my Board members and active U.S. military members.
Readers were paired - a Korean national or Korean-American would first read the name in Hangul (Korean language), followed by an American reading the name in phonetical English. This process continued unabated for almost seven hours until all 5936 names were read!
Members from Chapters 33, 100, 142, 312 and 313 participated as 'readers' as did Tom Stevens (new President), and others from KWVA Board. To those of you who supported this ceremony, my thanks!
But, let me get to the reason for this short and, strangely named, article - for sometimes, 'Fact, Stranger? Than Fiction!' can be so!
One of the reading pairs was a Korean-American KATUSA war veteran, Wondo Chang and his partner, Robert Mount, currently President of KWVA Chapter 142 in Frederick, MD.
And it is at the juxtaposition of 'reading pairs', chosen at random, that the title of this article became manifested this past 25 Jun! KATUSA veteran Wondo Chang, and KWVA veteran Robert 'Bob' Mount were again (Note: I'm a firm believer that 'coincidence' is sometimes pre-ordained!), 'paired', though this time somewhat more intimately, as 'readers' to read together.
But, unbeknownst to all, that day and 66 years earlier, the TWO had also been 'paired' though unknowingly, (and somewhat indirectly), in a combat related activity in Korea in late Sep-early Oct 1950!
On June 25, 2016, Chapter 142 opened the Golden Gears Car Show in Frederick, MD. Nine members turned out to Present The Colors for the Car Club, which has sponsored the Chapter for several years. Members presenting were Reg Kephart, Bob Mount, Tony Malavenda, Bob Eader, Chip Chipley, Glenn Wienhoff, Gene Rinehart, Fred Becker and Ted Carlson. Click on any image below for a larger view.

Community Foundation 2016 Scholarship Reception
Two Scholarships were awarded in 2016 from the William E. Weber Chapter 142 Korean War Veterans Association of Fredick, MD, Inc. Fund, administered by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. Secretary Glenn Wienhoff represented the Chapter at the reception held by the Community Foundation where Sponsors meet students who receive the Scholarships.
Both Scholarship Recipients are graduates of Middletown, MD High School and both had grandfathers who were Korean War Veterans. Miss Stephany Letourneau will be attending Juniata College in Pennsylvania studying Environmental Science and Miss Allison Miller will be attending Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania studying Special Education. Each Scholarship was for $1,700.
The Chapter wishes each recipient a successful college experience.
Frederick County History Project
On Saturday, May 21, 2016 (Armed Forces Day), several Chapter veterans (Davis, Easder, Knoebel, Malavenda, Murphy and wives) attended a luncheon at Country Meadows. Priscilla Rall had a short program prior to the meal. Many 90+ WWII veterans attended.
The purpose of the History Project is to interview as many veterans as possible. Copies of these interviews will be delivered to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to be kept as a permanent record for future generations to view and learn what these veterans went through.
